Brodeur Named NHL's Third Star for February

newjerseydevils.com - New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur has been named the National Hockey League’s Third Star for February, the league announced. Brodeur, whose month included seven wins against Atlantic Division opponents, posted a 9-3-0 record with a 2.22 goals-against average, .919 save percentage and three shutouts in 12 games as the Devils (40-18-6, 86 points) moved within three points of the top spot in the Eastern Conference.
The Devils’ netminder currently leads the league with 39 wins. His 2.06 goals-against average is second to Detroit’s Dominik Hasek (2.04), and his save percentage of .926 trails only Nashville’s Chris Mason (.926). Earlier this season, Brodeur was named the NHL’s First Star of the Week for the period ending Dec. 10, 2006. He was previously named NHL Defensive Player of the Month for January 2006, and Player of the Month in November 1997. Brodeur is one victory from extending his NHL record with a sixth 40-win season, and needs three shutouts to match the single-season record of 15 set in 1969-70 by Tony Esposito. Detroit forward Henrik Zetterberg and Islanders’ goaltender Rick DiPietro were February’s First and Second Stars, respectively. |
