newjerseydevils.com – John Madden may be known for his defense, but there's no mistaking his nose for the net.

Madden recorded his second 20-goal campaign (20) in 2007-08, hitting a new career high in points (43) and matching a career best with 23 assists. He tied Patrik Elias for third on the Devils in goals, and ranked fourth on the club in points.

Madden matched a career high with 23 assists in '07-08 and set a new career mark with 43 points.
A native of Barrie, Ontario, Madden earned the Selke Trophy in 2001 as the league's top defensive forward, and consistently has been a key component of New Jersey's checking game since signing as a free agent in 1997.

The 5-11, 190-lb. center was a part of New Jersey's Stanley Cup titles in 2000 and 2003, and appeared in his 600th career game on January 12 in Buffalo.

Here are some of Madden's best moments from last season, courtesy of the NJD TV video player:

October 17 at Pittsburgh
Madden notches his second consecutive two-point game with a goal and an assist against the Penguins. He picks up the secondary helper on a goal by linemate Jay Pandolfo, then stakes the Devils to a 2-0 lead by blasting a slapshot through Marc-Andre Fleury [ 700K ] en route to a 5-4 victory at Mellon Arena.

October 31 vs. Tampa Bay
New Jersey's first-ever win at Prudential Center comes on the strength of Madden's goal and three assists. He opens the scoring in the second period [ 700K ], then assists on every marker of Pandolfo's first career hat trick [ 700K / 700K / 700K ] for a 6-1 victory.

November 2 vs. Toronto

Always a scoring threat on special teams, Madden burns the Maple Leafs for a shorthanded tally
[ 700K] in a 3-2 triumph at Prudential Center.

December 2 vs. Atlanta

A goal and an assist gives Madden his sixth multipoint effort of the season. He collects his seventh of the year [ 700K ] by driving to the net for a redirection through Johan Hedberg. The Devils go ahead 2-1 in the second period and wind up with a 3-2 shootout victory.

December 16 vs. Philadelphia

His second of three multigoal performances, Madden strikes on the power play [ 700K ] and on the penalty kill [ 700K ] as the Devils edge the Flyers, 4-2. An assist on Jamie Langenbrunner's empty-netter rounds out a three-point night for No. 11.

January 20 vs. Toronto
Madden pots a pair against the Leafs including the deciding tally [ 700K ] early in the third period of a 3-2 win for New Jersey.

February 2 vs. Los Angeles
A two-assist night for Madden helps send the Devils to a 6-3 romp over the visiting Kings. Madden, a faceoff specialist, wins a key offensive-zone draw to Colin White, who buries the eventual game-winning tally [ 700K ] in the second period.

February 23 vs. NY Islanders
Madden outmuscles Miroslav Satan at the left point then gets a fortunate bounce for his club-record 16th shorthanded goal [ 700K ]. The Devils roll to a 4-2 decision over the Islanders.

February 24 at Washington
Madden's first career overtime goal [ 700K ] extends his season-high goal streak to three games and lifts the Devils to a 2-1 OT win at the Verizon Center.

April 13 at NY Rangers
After the Devils focus on getting more pucks to the front of the net in the postseason, Madden accomplishes just that in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference quarters against the Rangers. His centering feed from behind the net caromed off the skate of Marc Staal and into the New York net [ 700K ] to seal a 4-3 overtime win at Madison Square Garden.
