Cormier, who turned 18 on June 14, brings a 6-2, 201-lb. frame to the Devils' system.
The native of Moncton, New Brunswick, collected 18 goals and 23 assists in 51 games with Rimouski (QMJHL) last season, nearly doubling the 11g-10a-21pts of his prior campaign with the Oceanic.
He tallied 91 points in 26 games with West Kent of the New Brunswick Bantam AAA League and then made the jump to Junior A where he appeared in 31 games with the Moncton Gagnon Beavers in 2004-05 as a 14 year old (4-4-8).
Cormier was ranked 61st among North American prospects, and says he models his power game after Todd Bertuzzi. He is said to be at his best when using his speed and playing an aggressive game.
"He is a hard worker and is hard to knock off of the puck," said Chris Bordeleau of Central Scouting. "Patrice is the type of player who likes to play in traffic and likes to drive to the net."
The Devils acquired the 54th pick from Washington on Friday, when New Jersey traded down in the opening round.
