newjerseydevils.com – The Devils today acquired defenseman Niclas Havelid from the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for defenseman Anssi Salmela. The announcement was made by Devils’ President/CEO/General Manager Lou Lamoriello.
“Niclas Havelid is a veteran defenseman who brings a wealth of experience to our hockey team,” said Lamoriello. “We look forward to Niclas joining our defensive corps.”
Havelid, 35, is in his ninth National Hockey League season. The 6-0, 200-lb. defenseman has two goals and 13 assists for 15 points and 42 penalty minutes, while appearing in all 63 games this season. He has career totals of 34 goals and 133 assists for 167 points and 336 games with Anaheim and Atlanta.
Havelid spent nearly four seasons with the Thrashers, after being acquired from the Mighty Ducks on June 26, 2004.
The native of Stockholm, Sweden recorded a career-high 11 goals and 33 points during the 2002-03 season. He has seen action in 25 career playoff contests, recording six assists and two penalty minutes. Havelid was Anaheim’s second choice, and 83rd overall selection in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.
Born April 12, 1973, his international experience includes the 2006 Olympic Winter Games, 1998/2004 World Championships, and 1993 World Junior Championships. He joined the NHL after playing in Sweden.
Salmela is in his first season in North America, and has split time between New Jersey and Lowell (AHL). He had three assists and six penalty minutes in 17 games with New Jersey and eight goals and 16 assists for 24 points and 41 penalty minutes in 38 games with Lowell.
