Delbarton blanks Christian Brothers to take back-to-back titles
Michael Pirovano had a goal and three assists, and Kenny Agostino added a goal and two assists to lift the Green Wave to its second straight title in the New Jersey Devils/NJSIAA High School Ice Hockey Championships presented by Chase.
Michael Ambrosia, Michael Longo and Alex Velischek, the son of former Devil, Randy, each had a goal and an assist. Delbarton secured its fourth championship in nine seasons.
Head coach Bruce Shatel's squad scored once in the first period before adding three in each of the final two frames. Delbarton connected on its lone power play, and went a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
Christian Brothers, the 2005 Non-Public winner, was foiled in its bid for a second title in five seasons.
Delbarton was the only titleholder to successfully defend its crown in Saturday's action, which saw three games decided by a combined score of 10-0.
Kinnelon, last year's Public B winners fell, 2-0, to first-time finalist Ramsey, and Ridge, the 2008 Public A champs, came up short, 1-0, against Randolph.
Longo opened the scoring at 8:34 of the first, burying a wrister from the slot.
Agostino made it 2-0 early in the second. After Ambrosia had a shot blocked, he collected his own rebound and fed cross-slot for Agostino's one-timer at 1:35.
Velischek assisted on Orzetti's marker at 4:50, then fired one home from the point on the power play for a 4-0 Green Wave lead at 11:33.
Peter McMullen used one of the best individual efforts of the afternoon for Delbarton's fifth goal. McMullen was hauled down by Joakim Ryan on his way to the net, and with a delayed penalty call coming, McMullen swatted the puck in while sliding through the left circle on his stomach at 2:07
Ambrosia converted Pirovano's rebound into the open left side at 6:11, and Pirovano rounded out the scoring with a breakaway backhander at 10:49.
