Newark, NJ – The Devils today signed defenseman Cory Murphy to a two-way contract. The announcement was made by Devils’ President/CEO General Manager Lou Lamoriello. As per club policy, no further terms were disclosed.

Murphy, 31, joins the organization after spending 2008-09 with Florida, Rochester (AHL), and Tampa Bay. He combined for five goals and 11 assists for 16 points and 14 penalty minutes in 32 NHL games last season.

The 5-10, 185-lb. defenseman was claimed off of re-entry waivers by the Lightning on January 19, 2009, after starting the season with the Panthers. Murphy added two goals and four assists for six points and two penalty minutes in five AHL appearances.

The native of Kanata, Ont. made his North American professional debut after signing with Florida as a free agent on March 26, 2007. He spent six seasons in Europe, including 2001-03 with Blues Espoo (Fin.), 2003-05 with Ilves Tampere (Fin.), 2005-06 with HC Fribourg-Gotteron (Swi.), and 2006-07 with HIFK Helsinki (Fin.).

Born February 13, 1978, his Finnish teammates included Devils’ forward Ilkka Pikkarainen in 2006-07. Murphy played four seasons, 1997-98 through 2000-01 at Colgate University (ECAC), recording 28 goals and 83 assists for 111 points and 124 penalty minutes in 138 appearances for the Red Raiders.
