Devils top Rangers in preseason opener
Clarkson nets 2 PPG, Zajac scores in 6th round of shootout for 3-2 win
9:38p – Headed to the second shootout of the day here at the Rock. Lowell lost this afternoon, 4-3, in a shootout to the Rangers' AHL affiliate Wolfpack. Michael Swift scored twice and Nathan Perkovich added a goal for Lowell.
9:37p – Shanahan back on the ice in the final seconds of OT after Pikkarainen had taken his place on the right side of Parise and Zajac.
9:35p – With 50 seconds left in Del Zotto tripping penalty, Devs take their timeout. Just 1:18 left in OT.
9:31p – PP coming with 2:29 left in OT. NYR takes its timeout.
9:27p – Headed to extra time. Shots after 60 minutes: NJD 33, NYR 29
9:26p – Just 6.7 seconds away from OT.
9:14p – Rangers have tied it at 2 on a Jordan Owens goal at 11:46. Salvador sent Parenteau into the net, and it looked like Danis was unable to reset himself to make the stop.
8:55p – Long Island-native Matt Gilroy puts the Rangers on the board, stepping around Fraser and beating Danis with a backhander to his blocker side at 3:03 of the third. Devils still lead 2-1.
8:52p – Third period underway, Danis still in net for the Devils. Chad Johnson, in goal for the Rangers, came on for Henrik Lundqvist midway through the game.
8:35p – Two periods complete, with the Devils leading 2-0 on Clarkson's two PPGs.
8:33p – Salvador flattens Jordan Owens, who was attempting to throw a hit on the Devils blueliner behind the N.J. net with about a minute left in the second.
8:24p – Leblond, 6-2, 215-lb., earns the takedown in a fight with 6-7, 250-lb. Brent Henley at 14:18 of the second.
8:20p – Rangers parade to the penalty box continues with Prospal serving bench minor for too many men.
Clarkson scores second PPG of the game, firing Shanahan pass through Chad Johnson to make it 2-0 at 10:14. Zubrus picks up his second assist of the night.
8:10p – Yann Danis makes a couple of big saves, and defenseman Mark Fraser goes toe-to-toe in a fight with former Devil prospect Aaron Voros. A very nice showing by Fraser, one of the young players that Jacques Lemaire is taking a close look at in this training camp. Each gets five minutes for fighting at 8:02. Shanahan in the box for delay of game, after knocking the net off the moorings during the goalmouth scramble.
8:06p – Cormier in box for holding at 5:51.
8:03p – Avery out of the box, Devils misfire on four-minute PP.
7:59p – Teams back out on the ice to start the second period. Devils hold a 1-0 lead with 2:41 of PP time to open the frame.
7:43p – Devils will open the second period with 2:41 left of PP time on Avery's penalties.
7:39p – Rangers goal waved off after Sean Avery takes out Danis as the puck crosses the line. Avery penalized with two min. for goalie int., and another two min. for unsportsmanlike conduct; Devils PP with 1:19 left in first.
Clarkson (PP) stuffs home Bergfors rebound underneath Lundqvist for a 1-0 lead. His first of the preseason with assists to Bergfors and Zubrus at 13:31.
7:28p – Kotalik in the box for NY. Zajac pass hops over Shanahan stick at the side of the net.
7:23p – David Clarkson and Dainius Zubrus each wearing an 'A' tonight.
7:20p – Play stoppage with 10:34. Devils have been shorthanded twice, but had some solid scoring opportunities while down a man.

7:11p – Rolston's shorthanded chance goes wide…Shanahan in box for boarding Grachev at 1:32.
7:08p – Puck dropped to start the first period. Jacques Lemaire gets big ovation when his name is announced.
7:04p – Devils hit the ice for the first time this preseason.
7:01p – Crowd boos for Sean Avery and Henrik Lundqvist, both of whom are in tonight's starting lineup.
Tonight's starting lineup: Vladimir Zharkov-Patrice Cormier-David Clarkson at forward, Bryce Salvador-Mark Fraser on defense. Yann Danis will start in goal.
Danis' Devils mask must not have arrived in time for tonight's game. He looks to be wearing his old Islanders mask with the logo blacked out with spray paint. Jeff Frazee is tonight's backup.
Jamie Langenbrunner is among the veterans not playing tonight. Brendan Shanahan is wearing the captain's 'C' in Langenbrunner's absence and will skate on the right side of Zach Parise and Travis Zajac, normally Langenbrunner's spot in the lineup.
The other the projected lines based on the morning skate are: Rolston-Zubrus-Bergfors…Leblond-Pelley-Pikkarainen. Tonight's blueliners are Mike Mottau, Cory Murphy, Johnny Oduya and 18-year-old Alexander Urbom.
