Devils go 4-0-1 in preseason: Zajac breaks 2-2 tie, Zajac/Parise 1g-1a each

Devils beat Isles, 4-2
Peters fought Rechlicz twice on Tuesday.
Devils wrap up preseason with a perfect mark in regulation, going 4-0-1. Tonight's goal scorers: Parise, Rolston, Zajac and Shanahan. Brodeur goes the distance, making 19 saves.

Shanahan puts the Devils ahead, 4-2, blasting a Bergfors pass through Roloson on a 2-on-1 at 12:03 of the third.


Underway in the third period...

Zajac breaks 2-2 tie with his first of the preseason at 17:59 of the second. Devils keep the puck in at the blue line, Parise passes out of the left corner for Zajac's one-timer from the slot. Parise and Zajac each have 1g-1a through 40 minutes.

Rolston scores first of the preseason to tie it at 2 on the PP. Chipped puck around Radek Martinek on the rush, snapped puck through Roloson from the left dot at 14:21. Cory Murphy picks up his fourth assist of the preseason.


Penalties 21 seconds apart to Oduya and Niedermayer, and Isles use 5-on-3 power play to take a 2-1 lead. Mark Streit fires slapshot from top right circle, beats Brodeur over his blocker side at 10:18 of the second period. Both NY goals on the PP.

Clarkson scores a TKO against Brendan Witt at 6:40 of the second period. Fourth fight of the night.

Parise ties it 1-1 with assists from Langenbrunner and Zajac at 5:33 of second. Zajac passed cross-slot for Langenbrunner, whose shot was stopped by Roloson. Parise jammed the puck over the line for his first point of the preseason.


Devils kill it off.. Bergfors out of the box.

Devils shorthanded again.. Bergfors off for holding at 3:08.

Devils caught with too many men, Jack Hillen's floater from outside the left circle gives the Isles a PPG and a 1-0 lead at 1:12 of the second period.

Second period underway...

End of the first. Devils 0/1 on the PP, outshot the Isles 7-5.

Late turnover by Salvador in his own end, Brodeur made big save on Jeff Tambellini from the slot with 1:21 remaining.

Third fight of the period when Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond battles Rechlicz at 15:02 of the first. Rechlicz's second of the period. Leblond gets the edge with a right that popped off Rechlicz's helmet. Rechlicz gets two for the instigator, five for fighting and a 10-minute misconduct. Leblond gets five for fighting. Devils first PP.

Paul Martin breaks up 2-on-1 with John Tavares and Matt Moulson. 12:19 left in 1st.

Terrible turnover by Freddy Meyer up the middle; Rod Pelley intercepted for a long-range blast that was stopped by Roloson at 11:57.

Another fight, this time between Bryce Salvador and Jeremy Reich. Reich had to be helped off by an Isles' trainer after staying on the ice near the boards. Five each for fighting at 8:56.

Andrew Peters squares off with Joel Rechlicz. Refs get in quickly once the fight starts. Five each for fighting at 5:03.

A couple of seasoned vets opposing one another in net tonight. Brodeur is 37, while the Isles' Dwayne Roloson turns 40 on Oct. 12.

Nice scoring chance by Bergfors driving the net out of the left corner. He leads the Devils in scoring this preseason with 1g-3a. 16:23 left in 1st.

ZZ Pops gets second shift, followed by Rob Niedermayer centering Brian Rolston on the left and David Clarkson on the right.

Devils starting tonight's preseason finale with Dainius Zubrus centering Brendan Shanahan on the right and Niclas Bergfors on the left. On defense, Colin White and Mike Mottau. Martin Brodeur to start his third straight game to close out the exhibition slate.

Tonight's scratches are Andy Greene, Ilkka Pikkarainen, Jay Pandolfo, Andrew Peters, Patrik Elias, Mark Fraser and Matt Halischuk. Jay Leach, Rob Davison and Tim Sestito were placed on waivers earlier today.
