Zajac ties it, Devils win 4-3 in shootout
Devils shock Bolts in shootout for their first win of 2009-10: Zach Parise and Jamie Langenbrunner score in shootout, Brodeur denies Stamkos and Alex Tanguay.

ZAJAC TIES THE GAME WITH ONE SECOND LEFT IN REGULATION... DEVILS ARE GUARANTEED A POINT IN TAMPA. GREENE CHOPPED A BOUNCING PUCK ON NET, PARISE GOT A SWAT AT IT BEFORE ZAJAC BURIED IT PAST SMITH AT 19:59 OF THE THIRD PERIOD.


Brodeur out of the net with a minute to go in regulation... extra attacker on

Zubrus jamming at loose puck with 1:40 left. Gritty shift by his line with Rolston and Bergfors.

Parise throws bad-angle shot on net... 2:35 left for the Devils to draw even.

Tampa hits the pipe with 3:24 left in regulation... might have been Konopka.

Zubrus line with a hard-working shift in TB territory...

Closing in on five minutes left... ZZ Pops trying to apply pressure.

Penalty killers got it done... less than seven minutes left in regulation.

Zubrus into the box for a hold at 10:50. Devils need a big kill here trailing by a goal...

Todd Fedoruk breaks the 2-2 tie to give Tampa its first lead of the game. Victor Hedman carries into Devils' territory, dishes to Fedoruk for a shot from the right circle that makes it 3-2 Tampa at 5:41 of the third.

Stamkos' second of the game (PPG) ties the game at 2 just 1:52 into the third. Once again, St. Louis feeds Stamkos for a quick wrister, this time from near the top of the right circle. Took Tampa 12 seconds to cash in on a Devils' bench minor for too many men.

Third period underway...

**Jay Pandolfo spoke to MSG's Steve Cangialosi about weathering the storm in the second period to grab a 2-1 lead.

"They came at us pretty hard there," Pandolfo said. "We just have to worry about have a good third period here."

Pandolfo's goal was his first of the season. With the assist, David Clarkson notches assists in back-to-back games (3a). Rob Niedermayer picked up the secondary assist, and now has points in consecutive games (1g-1a).

"Clarkie tried to bring it out front and I just tried to find the open spot," Pandolfo said.

**Devils were outshot 25-9 in the second period, and have been outshot 32-21 overall.


Fight between Bryce Salvador and Zenon Konopka to close out the second period. Salvador posts a decisive win on Konopka, who was bleeding near his temple when refs intervened. Salvador responded to Konopka's center ice hit on Devils' rookie Matt Halischuk.

Jay Pandolfo's first of the season breaks the 1-1 tie with 1:51 left in the second period. David Clarkson's wraparound missed the mark in front, but Pandolfo smacked it inside the right post on the backhand to give New Jersey a 2-1 lead.


Lot of activity at the Devils' net late in this second period. Brodeur having to stand tall.

Killed off... Devils' PK perfect in two tries.

Brodeur outstanding stop on Ryan Malone's PP redirection...

Devils going back on the PK after Johnny Oduya called for interference at 14:45.

Smith has a couple of ugly cuts on the side of his face. Now has his mask back on, looks to be staying in the game.

ZZ Pops 3-on-1 results in Langenbrunner and a Tampa defender colliding with Mike Smith in net. Langenbrunner kept the puck for a wrister. Puck stays out... Smith on his back getting medical attention for two cuts on the right side of his face.

PK delivers. Score remains tied, 1-1, 7:27 left in 2nd.

Devils on their first PK of the night...

Tampa pressure in the Devils' zone results in Steve Stamkos tying the game, 1-1, at 9:49 of the second. Colin White lost his stick with the Lightning buzzing in NJ territory. Martin St. Louis set up Stamkos for a wrister from the high slot. 

Zajac gets in alone on Smith, has his wrister denied at 5:52.

Brodeur stops Malone breakaway 3:36 into the second period. He also had to come up big against Vincent Lecavalier just 1:40 into the frame.

Second period underway...

**Parise tells MSG's Steve Cangialosi that tonight's first period was among the Devils' best of the young season.

"Sometimes you need luck like that," Parise said of Smith knocking the puck into the Tampa net on the Devils goal.

Parise scored a team-high 45 goals last season, but wasn't gripping the stick any tighter after going the first two games without a goal.

"Pressing is probably the worst thing you can do," he said.

Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic drops tonight's ceremonial faceoff between Jamie Langenbrunner and Vincent Lecavalier.
**First period complete. Parise's first of the season (PPG) from Zajac and Martin have the Devils ahead, 1-0, after 20 minutes. New Jersey outshot Tampa, 12-7.

Tampa kills it off... under four minutes to go in first. Brodeur came up with a big pokecheck on Ryan Malone's shorthanded breakaway with 4:48 left.

Second PP of the period coming up for the Devils... chance to make it a two-goal lead. Victor Hedman off for slashing at 14:16.

Devils dominating the shots count, 8-3, midway through first period.

Zach Parise's first of the season – a power-play goal – has given the Devils a 1-0 lead at 4:46 of the first period. Travis Zajac dished to Parise at the side of the net, and No. 9 jammed the puck to the front, where Tampa goalie Mike Smith knocked it into his own net with the knob of his goal stick.


The Devils' top three lines remain the same, with the only changes coming on the fourth line and on defense. Andrew Peters is out of the lineup, replaced by Matt Halischuk. Andy Greene is making his first appearance of the season, replacing Cory Murphy. Martin Brodeur opposes Mike Smith in net.
