Delbarton wins third straight championship

Delbarton defeats Gloucester Catholic 7-2

Kenny Agostino scored four goals to lead Delbarton School to its third straight and fourth state championship in five years with a 7-2 win over Gloucester Catholic in the Non-Public school final today at Prudential Center.  The victory completed Delbarton’s dominating run through the bracket, in which it outscored the opposition 35-7.

Senior defenseman Tom Pesce gave Delbarton a 1-0 lead when his slap shot from the point beat Rams’ goaltender Pat McSparran 1:15 after the opening face-off.  Kenny Agostino’s first goal of the day 3:08 later extended the lead to 2-0.

Faced with the daunting task of overcoming a two-goal deficit to the two-time defending champions, Gloucester nonetheless responded.

Joe Crespo scored first for the Rams at 7:38, crashing into goaltender Bobby Kaminski in the process.  After each side had taken a penalty, John Gaudreau utilized the extra space the four-on-four situation provided, skating the puck into the Delbarton zone before unleashing a wrister from the circle to beat Kaminski glove side to even things up.

McSparran made a fantastic save a 3:49, going across the crease to rob Mike Pirovano.  Off the ensuing draw, however, Agostino notched his second of the game and put Delbarton up 3-2 after one.

The Green Wave regained their two-goal lead in the second, when Michael Ambrosia found an opening in the slot and fired a shot that McSparran could not hold on to.  Shortly thereafter, McSparran stopped Peter McMullen on a breakaway to keep Gloucester within striking distance heading into the third.

Agostino’s third was a highlight reel goal, as he skated along the boards and appeared headed behind the net before pulling the puck back and beating McSparran through the five hole.  Ambrosia added his second of the night 2:12 later, with Agostino picking up the assist to make it 6-2.  The scoring was completed as Agostino capped his memorable performance with his fourth goal in the game’s waning moments.  Ambrosia, who registered three assists, also posted a five point game.
