Kovalchuk headed to World Championship
Ilya Kovalchuk
Devils forward Ilya Kovalchuk has been added to the 2010 Russian national team seeking its third straight World Championship crown.

This will be the seventh trip to the worlds for Kovalchuk, who has 19 goals and 24 assists in 48 career games in the tournament. His overtime goal at the 2008 tourney clinched gold in Russia's victory over Canada.

He had five goals and nine assists in nine appearances at last year's World Championship, and was named tournament MVP.

Kovalchuk collected 41 goals and 44 assists in 2009-10, marking his sixth straight campaign with 40 or more tallies. He was acquired from Atlanta on Feb. 4 and struck for 10 goals and 17 assists in 27 games with the Devils.

Also named to the Russian roster on Monday were two-time defending Hart Trophy winner Alex Ovechkin, Alexander Semin and Semyon Varlamov – all teammates on the Washington Capitals.

Russia will play Slovakia (May 9), Kazakhstan (May 11) and Belarus (May 13) in Group A of the Preliminary Round in Cologne, Germany. The tournament gets underway on Friday, May 7, when Devils defenseman Andy Greene and Team USA take on host Germany.
