On Tuesday, Ilya Kovalchuk's game-winner led Russia to a 4-1 triumph over Kazakhstan. Alexander Ovechkin, Alexander Semin and Denis Grebeshkov also scored for Russia, which is aiming for its third straight world title.
It was the first point of the tournament for Kovalchuk, who's captaining the Russian squad. He posted 41 goals and 44 assists during the 2009-10 regular season.
Russia earned a berth in the qualification round and will battle Belarus in their preliminary round finale on Thursday.
United States seeks first win
Following 2-1 overtime losses to Germany and Denmark, the U.S. will be looking for its first win of the tournament when they face Finland on Wednesday.
The tourney has marked the Team USA debut of Devils defenseman Andy Greene. Former Devils goaltender Scott Clemmensen has started both games for the Americans.
