Tedenby was New Jersey's first-round pick in 2008.
Mattias Tedenby and Jacob Josefson will soon get their first chance to earn NHL jobs.

The Devils announced Friday that they have signed the two Swedish first-rounders, who will attend their first training camp this summer.

Tedenby was New Jersey’s first pick, 24th overall, in 2008. Josefson was chosen 20th overall in 2009.

“It’s very exciting and I’m really looking forward to it,” Tedenby said Friday from Sweden. “My goal is to, of course, get a spot. Whatever it takes, I’m going to do my best and see how it works.”

Tedenby, 20, is coming off of his second full season with HV 71, which beat Josefson’s Djurgardens squad to capture its second Swedish League championship in three years. The 5-9, 170-lb. center recorded 12 goals and seven assists for 19 points in 44 games, then added two goals and three assists in 16 postseason contests.

“It went pretty well,” Tedenby said. “We won the Swedish championship. My season didn’t start so good, but after a while, it went better and better and better. At the end of the season I was playing very good. I had a very nice development this season.”

Josefson, 19, also has his sights set on making the team out of training camp. Coming in at 6-0, 190 lbs., the center tallied eight goals and 12 assists for 20 points in 43 regular-season games. He added three goals and two assists in 14 playoff games.

“When I come over, I will try to take a spot and do whatever it takes to make the team,” Josefson said. “I’m really looking forward to taking this opportunity.”

The two were teammates on Sweden’s world junior team that won silver in 2009 and bronze in 2010. They spoke by phone on Thursday.

“He called me and told me that he was about to sign,” Josefson said. “I told him that I was, too. It feels good to come over with Mattias.”

Tedenby said the conversation was upbeat: “‘Let’s go. Now we do it.’”

After going head to head in the Swedish League's title round, they will be teammates again this summer in Newark.

“The whole team played really good, we lost in the finals to Mattias’s team,” Josefson said. “I’m pretty happy with my whole season. I think I developed well. I was happy with it.”

He added: “I’d rather have Mattias on my own team than play against him.”

As for the impact that winning a Swedish title could have on his prospects for making the NHL, Tedenby said, “I don’t know how much it helps, but it’s experience. It’s so big in Sweden. Hopefully it helps.”

Both players attended Devils rookie camp last summer, but as Josefson points out, the stakes weren't quite as high.

"Last time, I didn't come over to make the team," he said. "I watched and learned and saw the organization. This time I really come over to make the team."

That experience could be an asset this year.

“I know the coaches, I know the organization better,” Tedenby said. "I know some guys on the team, so I think it’s easier this year. And of course, Jacob is coming as well.”

Said Josefson: “It’s a dream come true, and I’m very excited.”
