Salvador out indefinitely with concussion
Devils host preseason meeting with the Islanders tonight
|Salvador's physical presence will be missed.|
The exact cause of the injury is uncertain. Salvador fought Kris Newbury in the Rangers game last Saturday. Against the Flyers on Tuesday, he was involved in a couple of big hits with James van Riemsdyk and Scott Hartnell. He did not play after the first period.
"I really can't answer what caused it," Lamoriello said. "I think it was the combination of a couple of games."
Lamoriello said there was immediate concern. Salvador underwent tests on Wednesday.
"Rather than say anything, I wanted to make sure he went through all the proper procedures and diagnostic tests, but he will be out indefinitely," Lamoriello said.
His absence leaves a void on the Devils' defense – and in the dressing room.
"He comes to play hard every night," said captain Jamie Langenbrunner. "He's battler, he's an experienced guy. You hate for guys to get injured, especially him."
Salvador, who had four goals, 10 assists last year, can hit and fight, and averages close to 20 minutes of ice time a game.
"Sal's one of those guys, he's competitive, he plays hard every night and bangs bodies," head coach John MacLean said. "Somebody else will have to step up in his place."
Lamoriello said there has been no discussion on whether or not Salvador will be placed on long-term injured reserve. The Devils begin the regular season next Friday against Dallas.
"I can't even give you a time frame," Lamoriello said. "I'm giving you what I've been told by physicians."
Martin Brodeur will get the start tonight when the Devils host the Islanders to close out the home portion of the preseason schedule (7 p.m. ET). Matt Corrente will replace Anton Volchenkov in tonight's lineup. Volchenkov skated this morning after leaving Thursday’s practice because of a shot he took off of his foot.
"I would've liked to get him in, but err on the side of caution right now just to make sure he feels good," MacLean said. "Hopefully, he feels better tomorrow and we can get him in tomorrow."
The Devils wrap up the exhibition slate Saturday at Long Island.
