Rolston was assigned to Albany (AHL) on Tuesday, and placed on re-entry waivers on Wednesday. Teams had until noon to claim him for half of his salary and half of his cap hit.
Rolston likely won't be in the lineup for Friday's meeting with Atlanta, but is expected to return to the lineup.
"He's going to play," Jacques Lemaire said. "Maybe not (Friday) because he hasn't skated for three days, I guess."
Lemaire continued, "When I feel he's in shape, he's going to play."
The Devils also announced they have recalled right wing Nick Palmieri from their top minor-league affiliate. Palmieri has six goals, five assists for 11 points in 24 games with Albany.
The Utica, N.Y., native scored 21 goals, 15 assists as an AHL rookie last season. He was recalled for six NHL games in 2009-10 and recorded one assist.
Lemaire hasn't decided if Palmieri will be in the lineup against the Thrashers.
"I had him last year, he did well," Lemaire said. "He just couldn't sustain the speed of the NHL and the intensity. But now he's a year older, and I just wanted to see how he looks."
Colin White did not skate at Thursday's practice, but will play against Atlanta.
