Devils prospect Eric Gelinas is taking part in the 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup, which opened Friday with the Saint John Sea Dogs' 4-3 win over the host Mississauga St. Michael's Majors.

Gelinas patrols the blue line for the Sea Dogs, who beat the Gatineau Olympiques in six games to win the QMJHL championship.

Gelinas, 20, was the Devils’ second choice, 54th overall, in 2009. The 6-4, 195-lb. defender was acquired by Saint John in a deal with Chicoutimi in January. He posted nine goals, 15 assists and was a minus-10 in 35 games with the Sagueneens, but averaged close to a point per game after the trade, collecting three goals, 17 assists  and a plus-25 in 27 games with the Sea Dogs.

In the playoffs, the Vanier, Ontario, native added 12 points (five goals, seven assists) in 19 contests and was a plus-10. Saint John lost only one game during the first three rounds, sweeping Cape Breton, then eliminating Victoriaville in five before sweeping Lewiston, Gelinas’ former club.

It will be worth keeping an eye on Gelinas’ teammate and QMJHL playoff MVP, Jonathan Huberdeau. The center is ranked among the top five propects for next month's Entry Draft in Minnesota, where the Devils will choose fourth overall.

OHL champions Owen Sound and WHL champions Kootenay also made it to this year’s Memorial Cup tournament, which is being hosted by the St. Michael’s Majors.

Devils prospects have left their mark on the tourney in recent seasons. Adam Henrique and Harry Young were members of the Windsor squad that won last year to become the first repeat Memorial Cup champ since Kamloops in 1994-95.
