Newark, NJ – The New Jersey Devils today named Scott Stevens and Matt Shaw as assistant coaches. Head Coach Peter DeBoer’s staff also includes Assistant Coach Dave Barr and Goaltending Coach Chris Terreri. The announcement was made by Devils’ President/CEO/General Manager Lou Lamoriello.

“Both Peter (DeBoer) and I look forward to the additions of Scott Stevens and Matt Shaw as assistant coaches,” said Lamoriello. “They bring experience to our coaching staff with Scott’s 22 years as a Hall of Fame defenseman and five seasons as a special assignment coach; and Matt’s 19 seasons of coaching success at every level.”

Stevens, 48, will enter his sixth season as a member of Devils’ coaching staff, having previously served as a special assignment coach. As a player, he spent 13 seasons with New Jersey and captained the team to three Stanley Cup Championships. Stevens was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on November 12, 2007, and on February 3, 2006, became the first player in franchise history to have his number (4) retired. His playing career spanned 22 seasons with Washington, St. Louis and New Jersey. Stevens’ 1,635 games played are second all-time among defensemen and seventh overall, while his 233 playoff appearances are sixth in NHL history. He ranks fourth on the Devils’ all-time games-played list (956), fourth in assists (337) and tied for seventh in points (430).

Stevens posted a career-high 78 points and league-leading plus-53 mark in 1993-94, becoming the only defenseman ever to lead New Jersey in scoring. In 2000, he became just the seventh defenseman to receive the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP, leading the team to its second of three championships. Stevens was named to the NHL’s First All-Star Team following the 1987-88 and 1993-94 seasons, the league’s Second All-Star Team three times, and the 1982-83 NHL All Rookie Team, while appearing in 13 mid-season All-Star Games. His international experience included the 1998 Olympic Winter Games, 1996 World Cup, 1991 Canada Cup and four World Championship tournaments. Stevens was Washington’s first choice and fifth overall selection in the 1982 Entry Draft, after playing for the Memorial Cup-winning Kitchener Rangers in 1981-82.

Shaw joins the Devils’ organization after spending the past three seasons as an assistant coach with San Jose, having been named to the position in July 2009. Prior to his time with the Sharks, he served as an assistant coach on Jacques Lemaire’s staff in Minnesota in 2008-09, first joining the club as a video coach in 2007-08. Shaw spent the previous seven seasons, 2000-01 through 2006-07, as an assistant coach with Houston (IHL, 2000-01 and AHL), while also serving as assistant general manager. He worked three seasons for Dave Barr (2000-01 to 2002-03), and was a part of the Aeros’ 2003 Calder Cup Championship team.

Shaw’s 19 seasons of coaching includes time spent as head coach with Quad City (UHL), leading the club to 2000 UHL Finals, as well as with Mobile (ECHL) in 1997-98. He also served as an assistant coach with Chicago (IHL) in 1998-99 and Quad City (CoHL) for two seasons, after beginning his coaching career as an assistant with his alma mater, Colorado College (WCHA) in 1990-91. A defenseman, Shaw earned All-WCHA Honorable Mention honors in 1988-89, and also played for United States International University.
