Matteau gets look on Devils\' top line

Stefan Matteau got a view from the top on Sunday.

The Devils’ 2012 first-round pick was bumped to the top line with Travis Zajac and Ilya Kovalchuk for the start of the game against the Canadiens in Montreal, and finished a plus-1 in 9:32 of ice time. Matteau has played in the first four games of the season, recording six shots and six hits while averaging 8:21 minutes.

“He’s done some good things,” head coach Pete DeBoer said. “He’s going to be a good NHL player for a long time–whether that’s this year or down the road, those are decisions that are above me. He’s willing to learn, he’s got good hockey sense, he’s got good size, he plays the game the right way and he’s eager, so he’s done a good job.”

Should Matteau play Tuesday in Boston, the Devils will have a decision to make prior to him appearing in a sixth NHL game: keep him in the NHL and use up the first year of his entry-level deal, or return him to his junior club in Blainville-Boisbriand (QMJHL).

LW Mattias Tedenby was assigned to Albany (AHL) on Monday.

LW Reid Boucher scored twice for Sarnia (OHL) on Friday to become the first OHLer to reach 40 goals this season. Boucher has been on a tear this month, collecting 20 points (13g-7a) in 12 games. He’s second on the Sting with 64 points (40g-24a).

D Damon Severson notched a goal and an assist Saturday to cap a three-point weekend (1g-2a) in two games for Kelowna (WHL). Severson, who has seven goals and 29 assists this season, is tied for sixth among WHL defensemen with 36 points.

LW Ben Johnson scored for Windsor (OHL) on Friday, and has collected six of his 13 goals this month.

LW Ben Thomson recorded two assists Friday for Kitchener, giving him 19 points (9g-10a) this season.

C Graham Black extended his points streak (3g-4a) to six games with an assist for Swift Current (WHL) on Friday. Black is third on the Broncos with 37 points (19g-18a).

D Reece Scarlett has points (1g-6a) in five straight games for Swift Current after netting a goal and an assist for the Broncos on Saturday. Scarlett now has points in eight of 10 January contests (2g-9a).

G Maxime Clermont got the victory over fellow Devils prospect Scott Wedgewood on Sunday, making 37 saves in Elmira’s 8-1 win over Trenton. It marked the fourth time the two have gone head to head this season. Wedgewood is 2-1-1-0 against Clermont, including a win in a relief appearance on Dec. 1 and a 33-save effort on Jan. 18. Clermont is 2-0-0-1 against Wedgewood, including one no decision in which he was pulled.
