Kovalchuk nets goal, assist as Russia tops U.S.

Ilya Kovalchuk
tallied a goal and assist as Russia improved to 3-0 at the 2013 IIHF World Championship in Helsinki with a 5-3 win over the United States on Tuesday.

Yevgeni Medvedev broke a 3-3 tie with 6:25 remaining in regulation for the Russians, who rallied from deficits of 2-1 and 3-2.

Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 19 of 22 shots to improve to 2-0. Ben Bishop (2-1) finished with 25 saves.

After Paul Stastny scored twice to stake the U.S. to a 2-1 first-period lead, Kovalchuk tied the contest at 2 with his fifth goal of the tournament. In the third, he set up Alexander Radulov's power-play tally that made it 5-3 with 4:33 to go.

Matt Hunwick had the other goal for Team USA. Anton Belov and Alexei Tereshenko also scored for Russia.

Kovalchuk (5g-2a) has recorded three straight multi-point games to start the tournament and has five goals on just nine shots. He played left wing on a line centered by Devils teammate Andrei Loktionov, who went for 7-for-19 on faceoffs and was a plus-1.

Ryan Carter and Stephen Gionta skated on a U.S. trio centered by Nate Thompson. Carter posted one shot, while Stephen Gionta went 1-for-1 on draws.

Team USA continues the preliminary round Wednesday against Finland. Russia faces France on Thursday.
