Kovalchuk\'s three-point game fuels Russia

Ilya Kovalchuk collected a goal and two assists to lead Russia to an 8-4 rout of Austria at the 2013 IIHF World Championship in Helsinki on Monday.

Kovalchuk recorded his fifth multi-point performance in seven games for the Russians, who jumped out to a 2-0 lead before allowing three straight goals.

The Russians scored eight times on just 18 shots. Semyon Varlamov needed 32 saves for the victory.

Kovalchuk assisted on Ilya Nikulin's power-play marker that tied the contest at 3. After Austria came back to make it 4-4, the Russians pulled away with four unanswered tallies.

In seven games, Kovalchuk has eight goals and five assists for 13 points, including two game winners, and is plus-8.

With the win, the defending champions can be seeded no lower than third for the quarterfinals, according to IIHF.com. The quarters get under way Thursday in Helsinki.

Denmark 3 Belarus 2: Albany Devils defenseman Raman Hrabarenka scored a goal for his first point of the world championships and was named Best Player of the Game for Belarus.
