Ryan Carter
notched a shorthanded goal and an assist for Team USA, which routed Russia, 8-3, in their IIHF World Championship quarterfinal in Helsinki on Thursday.

Carter posted his first points of the tournament and was named United States' Best Player of the Game. Russia, the defending gold medalists, allowed eight goals for the first time in world championship play.

Craig Smith posted five assists for the Americans, who also received two goals and two helpers from Paul Stastny. Alex Ovechkin was added to the Russian roster following Washington's elimination from the NHL postseason and recorded a goal and an assist in his first game of the tourney.

"I thought we played a pretty solid team game today. We tried to clog up everything, take away their speed, and keep the puck in their end. I think our game plan worked," Stephen Gionta told IIHF.com

Ilya Kovalchuk, the leading scorer in the preliminary round with 13 points, was held off the scoresheet for just the second time in this year's tournament.

Nineteen-year-old netminder John Gibson needed 31 saves to lead the U.S. into the semifinals where they'll face Switzerland. The Swiss edged the Czech Republic, 2-1, in their quarterfinal matchup to remain undefeated at 8-0.

Ilya Bryzgalov allowed four goals on 16 shots and was relieved by Semyon Varlamov with 1:48 left in the second period. Varlamov would yield four more goals on 11 shots.
