U.S. tops Finland for bronze at world championship

Alex Galchenyuk scored twice in the shootout and John Gibson stopped three of four shootout attempts as the United States edged Finland, 3-2, to win the bronze medal at the 2013 IIHF World Championship in Stockholm on Sunday.

Galchenyuk kept the U.S. alive by beating Antti Raanta with a forehand deke to open the third round. After Mikael Granlund missed to open the fourth round, Team USA head coach Joe Sacco went back to Galchenyuk, who scored the clincher.

IIHF rules allow teams to use the same shooter after three rounds.

Team USA earned its first medal at the world championship since 2004. The United States has won four world championship medals – all bronze – since claiming gold in 1960.

The U.S. took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Craig Smith and Paul Stastny. Lauri Korpikoski scored twice in the third period to even the score at 2, including the tying goal with 7:42 to go in regulation.

Gibson posted 36 saves for Team USA, which was outshot 38-26.

Stephen Gionta tied Stastny with a team-high four shots on goal in the contest. He finished the tournament with three goals in 10 games. Ryan Carter had a shorthanded goal and an assist in 10 games.
