Lamoriello recaps productive week for prospects

Rookie camp came to a positive conclusion on Friday and left Devils' President/CEO/GM Lou Lamoriello optimistic for what the future holds.

The club's prospects hit the ice for the final time with the Red team taking a 4-2 win in a two-period controlled scrimmage that focused on special teams. Each frame was split into two 10-minute power plays. Forward Derek Rodwell, the Devils' fifth-round choice in 2009, broke a 2-2 tie for Red and Reid Boucher added an empty-netter.

"I thought it was an outstanding week," Lamoriello told reporters at AmeriHealth Pavilion. "Of all the weeks we've had, I thought this was one of the better weeks as far as the tempo as far as the plays, moving the puck – just working and everything they've done."

The depth of talent on defense also has Lamoriello bullish about the Devils' blue line. The continued development of Eric Gelinas, Jon Merrill and Alex Urbom means they'll have a shot at the lineup this season.

"I was excited by a couple of them," Lamoriello said. "It's going to be very interesting. I will be shocked if there's not a young defenseman – at least one – in the lineup. But I've been shocked before. [That] would really force moves. It's happened in the past. But they have to be ready to play, and that's when you find out."

A busy offseason will have new faces Cory Schneider, Ryane Clowe, Michael Ryder, and Rostislav Olesz in the fold come training camp in September. But Lamoriello wouldn't rule out further bolstering his roster before then.

"If we can make our team better, we will," he said. "I think it's as simple as that. We're extremely pleased with the new additions of players. They're excited, and our present players who are here are excited. We'll be ready to play."
