The New Jersey Devils today named Mike Foligno as an assistant coach, joining Dave Barr and Scott Stevens and Goaltending Coach Chris Terreri on Head Coach Peter DeBoer’s staff. The announcement was made by Devils’ President/CEO/General Manager Lou Lamoriello.

Foligno, 54, joins the Devils after serving as an assistant coach with the Chicago Wolves (AHL) this past season. He previously spent time as an assistant coach with the Anaheim Ducks, after being named to the position June 24, 2010. He led the club to the 2006-07 Eastern Conference Championship and in 2009-10 served the dual role of head coach and general manager. In 1998-99, Foligno was named head coach of Colorado’s AHL affiliate in Hershey. He led the Bears to a 186-154-60 record in five seasons, including five straight appearances in the Calder Cup Playoffs. Foligno has also served as an NHL assistant coach with the Colorado Avalanche (1997-98) and Toronto Maple Leafs (1995-96). He began his professional coaching career with St. John’s (AHL) in 1995-96.

A right wing, Foligno was selected third overall by Detroit in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft. Born January 29, 1959, he played 15 NHL seasons with Detroit (1979-81), Buffalo (1981-90), Toronto (1990-93) and Florida (1993-94). Foligno scored 36 goals and was runner-up for the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league’s top rookie in 1979-80 with the Red Wings. In 1,018 career NHL games, the native of Sudbury, Ont. collected 355g-372a-727pts and 2,049 penalty minutes. Foligno also appeared in 57 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, including the 1993 Western Conference Finals.

Mike resides in Sudbury, Ont. and has four children: Cara, Lisa, Nick and Marcus. Nick is a member of the Columbus Blue Jackets and entering his seventh NHL season, while Marcus played in 47 games for the Buffalo Sabres in 2012-13. Nick (2004-07) and Marcus (2007-10) both played for Sudbury during Mike’s seven years with the Wolves.
