Hockey a welcome distraction for Brodeur
Hockey a welcome distraction for Brodeur

Martin Brodeur
came back to work on Monday. It's what his father would have wanted.

Denis Brodeur, Sr., passed away last Thursday at age 82. The legendary hockey photographer and former Olympic goaltender was mourned across the hockey world and remembered with a moment of silence before last week's preseason finale at Prudential Center.

Brodeur admitted the past few days haven't been easy, but hockey offers a welcome distraction.

"I always found hockey a place for me to do whatever I wanted and not have to worry about the outside things," Brodeur said. "For me to be back, I'm sure my dad probably – definitely – wanted me to be back as soon as possible and start playing."

The start of the new campaign is just days away; Brodeur is slated to start the season opener Thursday in Pittsburgh.

"Emotionally, I think I'll be all right, you never know," he said. "That was a tough three, four days I spent up in Canada there. Hockey always helps to forget things. You just do your thing. When that puck's coming a hundred miles an hour, you've gotta start thinking about the puck."

But Brodeur will also be thinking about dad.

"I will all the time. I always do," he said. "It's just in a different way now."
