The Devils placed forward Ryan Carter on injured reserve Wednesday and recalled forward Reid Boucher from Albany (AHL). The announcement was made by general manager Lou Lamoriello.

Boucher will make his NHL debut tonight when the Devils host the Canadiens in the second half of the home-and-home. Cory Schneider will start in goal and Adam Henrique is expected to play after missing the third period of Monday's game in Montreal.

Carter is on IR retroactive to Nov. 30, when he was hurt in a fight against Buffalo's Marcus Foligno.

"It's not his lacerations or anything above the neck, it's his leg," Lamoriello said. "Until that's right, he can't skate yet, but it has nothing to do with the fight. When he went down, he twisted his [leg]."

Boucher is Albany's second-leading scorer with 18 points (10g-8a) in 21 games, including two power-play goals. The 20-year-old was the Devils' fourth-round pick, 99th overall, in 2011, and signed an entry-level contract in March 2013.

"Scoring-wise he's had success down there and he's been playing extremely well," Lamoriello said. "He'll get an opportunity tonight."

Albany is second in the Northeast Division with a 12-7-1-1 record.

"We're extremely pleased with the whole team in Albany, especially when we took away two of their top defensemen [Eric Gelinas and Jon Merrill] and they've continued to play exactly the same way," Lamoriello said. "The whole lineup has done well."

Boucher took part in morning skate on a line with Patrik Elias and Steve Bernier.

"It's time to give Reid a look," Lamoriello said. "It's not like bringing an 18-year-older in. He's played his junior out so he's mature and he's a pure goal-scorer. So you give him an opportunity and see what he can do."

Boucher set a Sarnia (OHL) single-season record last year with 62 goals, eclipsing the mark previously held by Steven Stamkos.

Forward lines at morning skate:

Zubrus-Zajac-Jagr
Boucher-Elias-Bernier
Brunner-Henrique-Ryder
Sestito-Loktionov-Janssen

Extras: Josefson, Tedenby
