The Devils have placed forward Jacob Josefson on injured reserve, retroactive to Jan. 4, and claimed defenseman Alexander Urbom off waivers from Washington, general manager Lou Lamoriello announced on Wednesday.

Josefson, who was scratched from Tuesday's game against Philadelphia, is expected to "be out of practice for a few days," Lamoriello said.

"Josefson caught something when he was in Buffalo, then skated [Tuesday], and right now he's in bed [with a] virus. He's going to be out a few days."

Urbom, who was assigned to Albany (AHL), is back for his second stint with the Devils. New Jersey's third-round pick in 2009, Urbom was claimed off waivers by the Capitals on Oct. 3. He appeared in 20 games with the Caps, collecting a goal and an assist.

"He'll go to the minors, he'll play, we'll see where it brings us," Lamoriello said. "I spoke to him a few minutes ago, he seems excited to get back."

Urbom had to clear waivers when he was assigned by the Devils to Albany back on Oct. 2.

"He knows he's going to the minors, that's where he would've been going if he cleared the first time, so we'll see. We'll see where it goes. We didn't want to lose him, but we did and originally would've liked to have him go down [to Albany] and grow more. That's where he'll go and we'll see where that takes us."

This week's three-game homestand opened with Tuesday's 3-2 overtime loss to the Flyers. The Devils will be looking to snap a three-game skid (0-2-1) when they host Dallas on Thursday.

Cory Schneider will start against the Stars.

"What you do is, you worry about the next game and getting ready," Lamoriello said. "You know that everybody is in a pack and we played extremely well last night, that game could've gone either way. We played extremely well against Chicago [on Jan. 3], in my opinion. So I think that we just have to keep playing and allow the end result to take care of itself.

"This is not a time when you start thinking about anything other than concentrating on what you have control over. I really like the way the club played [Tuesday] night."

Lamoriello also updated the status of the club's injured players, including Patrik Elias (three games missed), who has yet to resume skating.

"Patty's status right now is going to be day-to-day before he gets on the ice," Lamoriello said. "He's doing extremely well, but he's doing all of his off-ice activity. Until he gets on the ice, we won't really know what the time frame is."

Damien Brunner (lower body) has missed eight games since getting hurt in the game against Ottawa on Dec. 18, but is making progress.

"I'd say he's maybe ahead of schedule," Lamoriello said. "But as I've always said, when it comes to knees, the last 10 or 15 percent are the most difficult of getting where you've got to get. There's no timeframe on it."

Peter Harrold (non-displaced foot fracture, 13 games missed) has resumed skating on his own. Adam Larsson (lower body, 21 games missed) has been practicing with the team and is available.

"We're just at the point, [Tuesday] and today, where he's actually in the mix of guys we're actually talking about as potentially able to play," head coach Peter DeBoer said. "But that doesn't mean he's going to play. It has to make sense and it has to help us win a game. That's what we're weighing every day with him."

Travis Zajac (rest) did not practice Wednesday.
