Five New Jersey high school ice hockey teams will have the opportunity of a lifetime to skate outdoors January 31 and February 1 to coincide with the 2014 NHL Stadium Series.
Less than a week after the New Jersey Devils take on the New York Rangers, the players of Chatham, Christian Brothers Academy, Don Bosco, Delbarton and St. Peter’s Prep will lace up their skates and battle the elements in games of their own at the outdoor rink built at Yankee Stadium.
“I think most people involved in hockey take the opportunity to watch the [HBO]show 24/7, they watch the outdoor game that is played every year and now there is multiple outdoor games, and the thrill that grown men have plying in this game give you a sense about how special it is,” said Delbarton head coach Bruce Shatel. “For 15, 16 and 17 year-old boys, it’s something that they probably never dreamed of, having this opportunity at such an early age. And when you talk about the conditions, we’re just hoping that it’s snow and not rain and we’re going to make the most of it.”
There will be two games held on January 31, followed by one the next day as Delbarton faces Catholic Memorial from Massachusetts. Don Bosco and Christian Brothers will get to check the ice out first in the initial matchup, which will then be followed by the game between Chatham and St. Peter’s Prep.
Tentative Outdoor Schedule:
1:15 p.m. Don Bosco versus Christian Brothers Academy
5:45 p.m. Chatham versus St. Peter’s Prep
5:30 p.m. Delbarton versus Catholic Memorial of Massachusetts
