2014 Stadium Series postgame notes
Patrik Elias and the Rangers' Mats Zuccarello each scored two goals in Sunday's 2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series game at Yankee Stadium, tying the individual record for most goals in a regular-season outdoor NHL contest (accomplished by six other players, most recently Rangers forward Mike Rupp in the 2012 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic).
Elias recorded his first goals since Dec. 13 and first multi-goal game since April 20, 2013. With 384 career goals (1,128 GP), he now is tied for 100th in NHL history with Richard Martin.
Coach Peter DeBoer
"I think I speak on behalf of everybody on our side, other than the outcome, it was one of the best hockey experiences I think any of us have had from yesterday through today. So other than the outcome, it was fantastic."
"You're not going to get perfect conditions when you stick a rink in the middle of a baseball stadium in February or late January, but I thought the entire event, from the ice to the production to the environment to the crowd, was outstanding."
OLYMPIANS SHINE ON OUTDOOR STAGE
Seven of the 10 goals were scored by players who will represent their countries in the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Olympic representatives also combined for 11 of 26 total points on the scoresheet, including Elias: 2g (Czech Republic); Jaromir Jagr: 2a (Czech Republic); Marek Zidlicky: 1a (Czech Republic).
RYDER TIES OUTDOOR GAME MARK
Devils forward Michael Ryder played in his third regular-season outdoor NHL game, tying forward James van Riemsdyk and goaltender Ty Conklin for the most career appearances in an outdoor game. Ryder also played for the Canadiens in the 2003 Molson Canadian NHL Heritage Classic at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton and for the Bruins in the 2010 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at Fenway Park in Boston.
