Newark, NJ – Don Gould of Whitehouse Station, NJ, today received the 2014 Service to New Jersey Hockey Award. The award is named for the late Dr. John J. McMullen, who brought professional ice hockey to the Garden State in 1982. It has been presented annually since 1984 by the National Hockey League’s New Jersey Devils to an individual or individuals who have supported amateur hockey throughout the state.

"It's an honor, for sure, unexpected and it's a humbling experience," Gould said at the award ceremony.

Gould currently serves as the Atlantic Amateur Hockey Association’s representative for girls’ and women’s hockey and represents the AAHA on the girls’/women’s section of USA Hockey, in addition to being a Mid-Atlantic Women’s Hockey Association director and executive board member since 2006.

Among his responsibilities are: the growth and development of female hockey in the AAHA; managing its Girls’ Development Camp and the National Player Development Camp selection process; and the management and implementation of USA Hockey’s American Development Model for girls across the district. As a sectional representative, Don provides support for the AAHA and input to USA Hockey at the national level.

For the past eight seasons, Gould has held the position of coach/assistant director of girls’ hockey for the New Jersey Colonials. His head coaching experience includes levels from 8U developmental to 19UTI, eight consecutive years as a head coach at 14UTI classification, eight consecutive MAWHA championships, nine consecutive AAHA Championships and nine consecutive USAH National Championship bids. The program has helped over 75 student/athletes go on to realize their goal of playing collegiate hockey in the ACHA and NCAA at D-I and D-III levels.

He served the 2005-06 season with the Bridgewater (NJ) Bears girls’ team. In 2003-04, Gould was president of the San Jose (CA) Junior Sharks girls’ team. He worked five seasons, 1997-2002, as a National Hockey League/New Jersey Devils off-ice official, working home games at the Meadowlands. Gould also spent six years, 1996-2002, as a youth coach/volunteer with the Bridgewater Bears boys’ team.

Originally from Buffalo, Don grew up playing on the ponds and ice rinks of upstate New York. He and his wife, Annie Lynch, raised four children and have been involved in Garden State youth hockey since 1996.
