Jagr\'s late goal forces OT in Czech victory over Slovakia

A late goal by Jaromir Jagr gave the Czech Republic reason to celebrate on the opening day of the 2014 IIHF World Championship in Minsk, Belarus.

Jagr scored with 2:07 left in regulation to force overtime before Jakub Klepis’ tally 1:50 into the extra session sealed a 3-2 Czech win over Slovakia on Friday.

Jagr, playing in his ninth world championship, registered four shots in 16:46 of ice time and now has 26 goals and 59 points in 61 career appearances.

Other Devils in action were Damien Brunner, whose Swiss squad was blanked by Russia, 5-0, and Canada assistant coach Peter DeBoer, who saw his group fall, 3-2, to France in a shootout.

Canada had won nine straight tournament openers.

Albany (AHL) defenseman Raman Hrabarenka and host Belarus, fell to the U.S., 6-1.

Saturday's schedule includes the Swiss (Group B) taking on the United States (NBCSN, 1:45 p.m. ET), while Canada (Group A) plays Slovakia (1:45 p.m. ET).

Czech Republic (Group A) returns to action Sunday against Sweden (1:45 p.m. ET).
