Devils Draft Choices

A breakdown of each of the Devils' draft picks, including those that were acquired/traded:

  • Round 1 - 30th overall (acquired via 3/6/14 NHL decision-not eligible to be traded)
  • Round 2 - 41st overall
  • Round 3 - 71st overall
  • Round 4 - 101st overall (traded to Winnipeg, 2/13/13)
  • Round 5 - 131st overall
  • Round 6 - 152nd overall (acquired from Florida, 9/28/13)
  • Round 6 - 161st overall
  • Round 7 - 191st overall (traded to Phoenix, 4/3/13)

First Round Notes

  • New Jersey has selected 32 players in the first round all-time, including 19 forwards (last time, Stefan Matteau, 29th/2012), 10 defensemen (last time, Adam Larsson, 4th/2011) and three goaltenders (last time, Ari Ahonen, 27th/1999)
  • The club has drafted a forward with three of its last four first-round selections: Stefan Matteau (2012), Jacob Josefson (2009) and Mattias Tedenby (2008). Defenseman Adam Larsson (2011) was the exception. (First-round picks in 2010 and 2013 were traded)

30th Overall Pick

  • The Devils have drafted a player with the 30th overall selection once previously. At the 2006 Entry Draft in Vancouver, the Devils traded the 25th overall pick to Carolina for the 30th and 77th (previously acquired from Vancouver) overall selections. New Jersey selected defenseman Matt Corrente with the 30th choice.
  • Previous 30th overall selections include: Tanner Pearson (2012, Los Angeles), former Devil David Steckel (2001, Los Angeles), and seven-time NHL All-Star defenseman Sandis Ozolinsh (2nd round, 1991, San Jose).

Instant Impact

New Jersey’s last two first round selections, Stefan Matteau (2012) and Adam Larsson (2011), have each made their NHL debut in the season-opener of the year they were drafted. Matteau made his debut January 19, 2013 at the New York Islanders.  At 18 years, 10 months &  29 days, he became the eighth-youngest player in Devils' history. Larsson appeared in the October 8, 2011 opener vs. Philadelphia, and at  18 years, 10 months & 26 days was the seventh-youngest player in franchise history.

Forward Thinking

New Jersey has selected a forward with 12 of its 18 picks in the previous three Entry Drafts and with nine of its 12 choices over the last two. Reid Boucher (4th round, 2011) and Stefan Matteau (1st round, 2012) have already made their NHL debut with the Devils.

Getting Defensive in Round Two

The Devils have chosen a defenseman in the second round in four of the past five Drafts:

  • 2009 - Eric Gelinas, 54th overall choice -  He posted 7g-22a-29pts in 60 games in 2013-14, which was the third-highest total (tie, Jacob Trouba, Winnipeg & Olli Maatta, Pittsburgh) among rookie blueliners behind Boston's Torey Krug (14g-26a-40pts) and Anaheim's Hampus Lindholm (6g-24a-30pts).
  • 2010 - Jon Merrill, 38th overall choice - Recorded 2g-9a-11pts in 52 games during his first NHL season in 2013-14.
  • 2012 - Damon Severson, 60th overall choice - Finished sixth (tie) among WHL defensemen with 15g-46a-61pts and was named to the league's West Second All-Star Team in 2013-14. He also led Kelowna with 4g-14a-18pts in 14 games overall during the post-season.
  • 2013 - Steven Santini - 42nd overall choice - Posted 3g-8a-11pts in 35 games and was named to the All-Hockey East Rookie Team in his freshman season with Boston College. Also scored 1g in five games with Team USA at the World Junior Championships.
