Devils prospects skated in their first 5-on-5 scrimmage of Rookie Camp on Wednesday, with Red taking an 8-4 “shootout” victory over White.

Tied 1-1 after the first period and 2-2 after two, each side used 11 skaters in a shootout that went to Red, 6-2.

Ben Thomson’s goal with 2:26 remaining in the second 20-minute half knotted the game for Red. That answered Miles Wood’s tally that gave White a 2-1 lead with 8:26 to go.

Anthony Brodeur and Charlie Finn split goaltending duties for Red, while Scott Wedgewood and Jeremy Brodeur shared the workload for White.

Defensive prospect Steven Santini delivered two big hits, setting the tone for a physical afternoon.

John Quenneville opened the scoring for White just 24 seconds into the game on a set up from Blake Pietila. Red responded on a Tom Hartnett goal with 2:09 left in the frame.

“I haven’t played at that pace since I played at the Under-18 in Finland,” Quenneville said. “It was nice to crank it up a little bit. It got pretty physical out there, so it was nice to take and give a few hits, too.”

Scoring early wasn’t a bad way for the Devils’ first-round pick at this year’s Draft to make a quick impression. He has an ability to find the back of the net, having potted 25 goals with Brandon (WHL) last season.

“It was cool,” Quenneville said. “Pietila made a really nice pass to me and I kind of caught the d-man off guard and just went to the net and put it home.”

With three days of camp complete, Quenneville is finding his way with his new organization.

“Compared to when I first got here, it’s on a different level,” he said. “I think I was pretty nervous and scared the first couple of days, but now, I’m starting to get more comfortable around the room, comfortable with the guys and it’s a lot better. I’ve met a lot of really good guys – I didn’t know very many guys other than the Western league guys when I came. It’s great to meet new guys and make new friends.”
