Great Games #5 - Gelinas ices Rangers in OT

Newjerseydevils.com looks back at 10 of the top Devils games from last season.

#5 - Dec. 7, 2013 Devils 4, Rangers 3 OT

The Devils struggled in early December, dropping a home-and-home set with Montreal before managing only 11 shots in home loss to Detroit.

But a second trip across the Hudson for their third encounter with the Rangers provided the tonic for a turnaround.

Under the bright lights of Broadway, the Devils were led to victory by rookie Eric Gelinas, whose power-play goal in overtime capped a 4-3 victory at Madison Square Garden.

The Devils fell behind 2-0, then got off the mat in the second period when Cam Janssen crashed the net to bury a Tim Sestito rebound. It was Janssen’s third goal of the season, doubling his total from his previous 312 career contests.

In the third, Travis Zajac knotted the game at 2 before Michael Ryder scored to give the Devils a 3-2 lead. The Rangers came back to tie with 22 seconds left in regulation, but Gelinas made sure his first career game-winner would be one to remember.

He rocketed a one-timer off a pass from Patrik Elias, beating Henrik Lundqvist 1:15 into the extra session and lifting the Devils to their third straight win over the Blueshirts.

"Probably the biggest [goal] of my career, besides my first one," Gelinas said. "It was a great feeling.”

It was just the way Peter DeBoer drew it up.

"We wanted Eric Gelinas to shoot and Steve Bernier in front of the net with a screen,” the head coach said. "It's not rocket science."

Said Gelinas: "I'm fortunate to be out there in that type of situation, and I gave it a shot. It definitely feels good to be rewarded and to get that winner, but it was a team effort."
