Great Games #6: Greene Day in D.C.

Newjerseydevils.com looks back at 10 of the top Devils games from last season.

#6 - Dec. 21, 2013 Devils 5, Capitals 4 OT

Two two-goal deficits weren’t enough to keep the Devils down in D.C.

Trailing 3-1 after two periods and 4-2 in the third, the visitors rallied to knot the game at 4 before Andy Greene eventually settled a 5-4 overtime victory over the Capitals.

Greene capped his three-point night (1g-2a) by swatting a Jaromir Jagr rebound past Braden Holtby just 43 seconds into the extra session. The Devils rebounded from an OT home loss to Anaheim the night before to claim their second four-game point streak of the season.

"I honestly can't remember the last overtime goal I scored," Greene said. "It feels great to do it and get a big win tonight."

Marek Zidlicky, with his first two-goal game of the season, was one of six Devils with multipoint games. Jagr posted a goal and two assists, while Dainius Zubrus notched a goal and an assist, and Patrik Elias and Travis Zajac each recorded two helpers.

Jagr’s 694th career goal tied him with Mark Messier for seventh all-time.

"I felt like we were playing very good hockey the first two periods, and I look at the scoreboard and we were down 3-1," Jagr said. "That was kind of tough to swallow, but we got some lucky bounces in the third period and tied the game and went to overtime again. I thought we responded very well when we were down two goals, and it's a big win for us.”

Coach Peter DeBoer had high praise for Jagr.

"He amazes me every night I come to the rink," DeBoer said. "I don't have a lot more adjectives to describe him, but he's a pleasure to work with.”

As for the comeback, DeBoer never counted out his club. They improved to 5-2 in games decided in OT.

"I think everyone's surprised we came back (but) I think the least surprised guys are in our room," DeBoer said. "I think they felt confident all night they could still make a game of it."
