Defensemen Brian Rafalski participated in a video public service announcement on behalf of the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA), promoting the importance of reading in celebration of Read Across America. Devils players participated in photo shoots to help promote various causes, including former defenseman Tommy Albelin (Union County D.A.R.E.), defenseman Sean Brown (Madison, NJ Twp. Schools), goaltender Scott Clemmensen (Fanwood, NJ PBA and Community Options), left wing Patrik Elias (Marlboro, NJ Schools), right wing Brian Gionta (Devils Fan Club Charities, New Jersey Army & Air National Guard, and Hockey Fights Cancer), center John Madden (Ramsey, NJ Mites Hockey), right wing Grant Marshall (Children's Miracle Network, the Knights of Columbus - Bergen Federation, St. Barnabas Burn Foundation, the Community Campus of Middlesex County, and Sovereign Bank Goals for Kids program), defenseman Paul Martin (Jackson, NJ Roller Hockey program and M.I.K.E.S for Manville), defenseman Brian Rafalski (Community FoodBank of New Jersey and the Roxbury, NJ Ice Hockey program), center Erik Rasmussen (St. Barnabas Burn Foundation), defenseman Colin White (Paramus, NJ D.A.R.E.).
Devils players and alumni visit pediatric units at local hospitals each season. Hospitals visited recently include: Children's Specialized Hospital (Mountainside, NJ); Hackensack University Medical Center (Hackensack, NJ); Morristown Memorial Hospital (Morristown, NJ); Overlook Hospital and Valerie Center (Summit, NJ); Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (New Brunswick, NJ); Saint Barnabas Medical Center (Livingston, NJ); Saint Joseph's Hospital (Paterson, NJ); and University Hospital (Newark, NJ). Players and Alumni sign autographs, pose for pictures, visit with youngsters, and distribute gifts during their visits.
The Devils participate in the NHL's online charity auction, while the team captain wears a special Hockey Fights Cancer patch during a selected game. The team also hosts an HFC All-Star Kids awareness night, with patients from a local hospital attending a game. They are treated to tickets in a suite, pizza party, and visits from Devils' players, broadcasters, and the mascot. Jamie Langenbrunner serves as the Devils' HFC All-Star Captain. |
