| N.J. Devil History The legend of the infamous "New Jersey Devil" has fascinated state residents since the early 1700's. While there are many variations of the story, it most frequently begins with Mrs. Leeds, a farm woman from the Pine Barrens region of South Jersey. Already the mother of 12 children, when Mrs. Leeds found out the 13th was on the way, she apparently exclaimed in despair, "Let it be a devil!" In addition to being a busy mother, it should be noted that Mrs. Leeds was rumored to have dabbled in sorcery and many thought her to have been a witch. On the night of her delivery in 1735, fierce thunderstorms hit the area and an air of uneasiness surrounded her house. When she finally gave birth, the offspring was a emonic creature that has alternately been reported to have had the features of a bat, snake, kangaroo, as well as a man. In any case, the creature quickly flew out an open window and immediately began cutting a wide swath of havoc and destruction throughout the state. The legend has been fueled throughout the years by alleged sightings. The devil has been the object of numerous hunts and other pursuits, none of which have apparently been successful. In 1993 Continental Airlines Arena received numerous reports of a large "red" figure perched high in the catwalk. This "ed" figure was said to be wearing a hockey jersey and tossing peanut shells down on the people sitting in the stands. Upon further investigation, the reports were confirmed and this "Red" figure was approached by Security for a ticket stub. To everyone's surprise the figure revealed himself as the legendary "New Jersey Devil". He confessed that he was a huge hockey fan that would like to sit in a real seat rather than on the cold, catwalk steel. Since that night, the New Jersey Devil, a once-feared piece of New Jersey history, has been dancing in the stands, skating on the ice, and cheering for the team as the New Jersey Devils number one fan! |
