Newark, NJ – The New Jersey Devils Alumni Association today named four student-athletes as recipients of this year’s scholarships for college-bound hockey players. The announcement was made by the association’s director, Bruce Driver.
The 2010 winners are: Michael Auriemma, Brick, NJ, Brick Township High School/Southern New Hampshire University; Trevor Horton, Kinnelon, NJ, Kinnelon High School/Cornell University; Kush Patel, Kendall Park, NJ, South Brunswick High School/The College of New Jersey; and Steven Valeri, Chatham, NJ, Chatham High School/Boston College. Each recipient will receive a $2,500 scholarship to assist in their education at the college or university of their choice. The awards were presented at the NJSIAA scholarship luncheon this Sunday, May 16, 2010.
Winners were nominated by their athletic director or coach and complied with Scholarship Rules, which include the following criteria: through their most recent grading period, the applicant must have attained a high school cumulative grade point average of 2.5 (on a 4.0 grading system) or equivalent grade if the student’s school uses a different grading system.
Additionally, the applicant must have shown a commitment to volunteer work and community service through continued participation in a variety of projects or community organizations. Community activities should reflect that the applicant is unselfishly “giving back” to society and that the applicant is motivated to serve. Each winner must be accepted for admission on a full-time matriculating basis to a two- or four-year academic program at an accredited post-secondary educational institution.
The alumni association was formed for the purposes of: bringing together former Devils’ players to develop enjoyable civic activities and charitable fund raisers; participating in worthwhile charity/community service programs; and developing means to help promote amateur hockey. This marks the ninth year of the alumni association’s scholarship program. For a copy of the Official Rules and further information, please contact the Devils at 973-757-6200.
