Devils-Islanders Preview

GAME: New Jersey Devils (16-5-7-0) at New York Islanders (12-13-2-1).

TIME: Tuesday, 7 p.m. EST.

The New York Islanders are having a pretty tough time getting the puck past Martin Brodeur.

The New Jersey Devils and Brodeur look to continue their recent domination of the Islanders when the teams meet at Nassau Coliseum.

The Devils have shut out the Islanders three straight times, twice this season and in the final meeting of last season. Brodeur stopped 25 shots in a 4-0 victory at Nassau Coliseum on Oct. 28, and made 18 saves to lead New Jersey to a 1-0 overtime win at the Meadowlands on Wednesday.

"I usually never think about shutout, but with 10 minutes left in the game knew I was going to have to do it for us to win," Brodeur said after Wednesday's victory.

The win improved New Jersey to 7-0-1 -- including four shutouts -- in the last eight meetings with the Islanders.

Brodeur leads the NHL with seven shutouts and has 71 in his career, the most among active goaltenders.

Last season's Vezina Trophy winner may be coming off his best game of the season, a 2-0 victory over Atlantic Division rival Philadelphia on Saturday.

Brodeur made 32 saves for his league-leading 16th victory, one night after stopping 37 shots in a 3-3 tie with Philadelphia.

"They threw a lot of shots on the net last night," Brodeur said. "It was the same type of thing tonight. They got 72 shots in the two games. It usually takes me four or five games to get that."

The Flyers are four points ahead of the Devils in the Atlantic Division.

The Devils are 4-0-1 in their last five games since going winless in four straight (0-2-2). New Jersey, 7-1-4 on the road, will be playing the second game of a five-game road trip.

The Islanders are 3-0-0-1 in their last four since a seven-game losing streak. While they couldn't generate any offense against the Devils on Wednesday, they outscored the opposition 14-4 in the three victories.

New York scored four third-period goals and Garth Snow stopped 18 shots for his first shutout of the season in a 4-0 win over Atlanta on Saturday.

"We did a lot of breakaways in practice (Friday), so I was kind of used to it," Snow said. "I won't get many points for style, but the bottom line was the puck was kept out of the net."

Trent Hunter, Shawn Bates, Alexei Yashin and Michael Peca scored as the Isles recorded their first shutout since a 6-0 win over Buffalo on Oct. 11. Peca's goal was his first since Nov. 6, a span of 16 games.

Following Tuesday's contest, the Islanders begin a three-game road trip against another local rival, the New York Rangers, on Thursday.
