Devils-Thrashers Preview

GAME: New Jersey Devils (16-6-7-0) at Atlanta Thrashers (16-13-3-1).

TIME: Thursday, 7:30 p.m. EST.

The Atlanta Thrashers are struggling to score goals. Playing against one of the NHL's top goalies isn't going to help matters.

Especially since New Jersey Devils netminder Martin Brodeur is coming off one of his worst performances of the season.

Brodeur and the Devils will try to extend the Thrashers' scoring drought when the teams meet at Philips Arena.

Atlanta hasn't scored in six periods since Serge Aubin's empty-net goal with 2:24 remaining in a 6-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday.

The Thrashers have been shut out in back-to-back games by the New York Islanders and Washington Capitals, respectively.

Atlanta couldn't score despite 37 shots as they were blanked 5-0 by Capitals goalie Maxime Ouellet on Tuesday.

"It's very plain and simple, we got outworked. We got outplayed and basically never touched the puck," Atlanta coach Bob Hartley said.

The loss halted Atlanta's franchise-best home winning streak at three games, and also ended a personal three-game win streak for Thrashers goalie Byron Dafoe.

Ilya Kovalchuk, Atlanta's leader with 18 goals, hasn't scored in seven games and has just one goal in eight games this month.

Things won't get any easier for the Thrashers against Brodeur, who leads the NHL with seven shutouts. No other NHL goalie has more than four.

Brodeur is tied for the NHL lead in wins with 16 and his 1.65 goals-against average ranks third. The reigning Vezina Trophy winner has three shutouts in his last six starts, but couldn't hold leads of 2-0 and 3-2 in Tuesday's 5-4 loss to the New York Islanders.

"I thought we played hard, they just had a lot of good bounces," Brodeur said. "They shot a lot of pucks through screens that found their way into the net."
