Hurricanes-Devils Preview

GAME: Carolina Hurricanes (15-21-9-2) at New Jersey Devils (23-11-10-1).

TIME: Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. EST.

The Carolina Hurricanes are the lowest scoring team in the NHL. They're hoping Justin Williams can help change that.

Carolina, which has scored just 87 goals this season, acquired Williams from the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday for defenseman Danny Markov.

He'll try to help the Hurricanes win for just the second time in seven games when they visit the defending Stanley Cup champion New Jersey Devils.

Williams had six goals and 20 assists for Philadelphia. Carolina general manager Jim Rutherford is hoping he can inject some energy into the Hurricanes' attack.

"Obviously there's not the right mix right now," Rutherford said. "And we have to do something to change that."

Williams suited up for his first game with the Hurricanes on Tuesday. He had just one shot on goal in a 3-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators.

"The positive thing is I'm coming to a team that really wants me here and I'm going to play here," Williams said after the game. "I'm excited to turn a new page in my career."

Williams' presence did not do much to help the Hurricanes against the Senators. They managed just 14 shots, a season low. Carolina coach Peter Laviolette said there is no excuse for the way his team has been approaching games recently.

"We're harmless. We're a harmless team," he said. "We don't want to hurt anybody, we don't want to take possession of the game, or bang bodies or crash the net. It's frustrating just trying to figure it out."

The Devils are 3-1-1 in their last five games, moving within two points of the first-place Flyers in the Atlantic Division.

Rookie goalie Scott Clemmensen, called up from Albany to replace the injured Corey Schwab, stopped 25 shots in his first NHL start for a 3-0 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday.

Schwab injured his groin during practice Monday and did not dress.

Turner Stevenson, who had just three goals in 24 games this season, scored twice against the Penguins.

New Jersey is 3-2-1 since veteran defenseman Scott Stevens was lost indefinitely with a concussion.
