Kings-Devils Preview

GAME: Los Angeles Kings (22-16-13-6) at New Jersey Devils (29-16-10-1).

TIME: Sunday, 2 p.m. EST.

The Los Angeles Kings were buried under an avalanche of goals in their last game. Next up, a date with the defending Stanley Cup champions.

The Kings will look to rebound from a dismal performance in Buffalo on Friday when they take on the New Jersey Devils at Continental Airlines Arena.

Los Angeles built a seemingly comfortable 3-1 lead more than halfway through its game against Buffalo, but suffered a colossal collapse as the Sabres scorched the Kings for the next seven goals.

"For whatever reason, we stopped playing," said Ian Laperriere, who scored once for the Kings. "I can't ever recall a game like that."

Jozef Stumpel and Scott Barney each added a goal and assist for the Kings, who were 4-0-4-2 in their previous 10 road games. The eight goals were the most Los Angeles allowed since an 8-4 loss to Chicago on Dec. 18, 1999.

Los Angeles, which sits one point behind sixth-place Dallas in the Western Conference with 25 games remaining, has struggled recently against New Jersey, losing four of the last five meetings, including a 4-0 defeat back in November.

The Kings close their trip through the New York area against the Islanders on Monday before returning home to face Dallas on Wednesday.

The Devils avoided their first four-game losing streak since November 2001 with Saturday's 4-1 win over visiting Carolina. New Jersey had been outscored 11-2 during its slide.

The newly formed line of Scott Gomez centering for Brian Gionta and Patrik Elias accounted for six points for New Jersey, which is in sixth place in the East, four points behind Ottawa and Boston.

"It certainly feels good," Gionta said. "We're only two games into it. We're still getting used to the guys. It's still an adjustment and we have to keep it going."

Jeff Friesen and Mike Rupp also scored for the Devils, who have won all four of their afternoon contests this season.
