Lightning-Devils Preview

GAME: Tampa Bay Lightning (4-3-2) at New Jersey Devils (4-4-0).

TIME: Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. EDT.

To pad his Hall of Fame credentials, goaltender Martin Brodeur will have to defeat a team he has had little luck against in recent years.

Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils face off against the defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning at Continental Airlines Arena.

With 407 career wins, Brodeur is tied with Hall of Famer Glenn Hall for sixth place on the all-time wins list. Brodeur has needed just 744 career games to pull even with Hall, who appeared in 906 games during an 18-year career with the Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues.

After passing Hall, Brodeur will need 16 more victories to move past Tony Esposito into fifth place.

Coming into this contest, Brodeur also has 75 career shutouts, tying him with Ed Belfour of the Toronto Maple Leafs for the most among active players.

The next shutout for Brodeur would tie him with Esposito for seventh place all-time.

Between March 1994 and March 2001, Brodeur was 20-4-2 against Tampa Bay. In 10 games against the Lightning since then, however, Brodeur is 1-6-3 and has gone winless in his last six starts (0-4-2) against them.

Brodeur gave up goals 40 seconds apart late in the third period of New Jersey's 4-3 loss Saturday night to the Atlanta Thrashers, evening his record this season at 4-4.

Tampa Bay has been a tough opponent for New Jersey recently. The Lightning are 14-30-7 all-time against the Devils, but have gone unbeaten in the last seven meetings (5-0-2).

Dmitry Afanasenkov had the lone goal for Tampa Bay in its 4-1 loss Saturday to the Ottawa Senators.

Dave Andreychuk is still looking for his first goal of the season for the Lightning. The 23-year veteran has 634 career goals, good for fourth among active players behind Mario Lemieux, Steve Yzerman and Luc Robitaiile.

Andreychuk has scored at least 20 goals in each of his last five seasons. Sixty-four of his goals came in his three-plus seasons with New Jersey from 1995-98.
