Preview: Devils at Capitals
New Jersey Devils

newjerseydevils.com –
The Devils' season-high winning streak is over, but they have good reason to feel optimistic about bouncing back quickly.

New Jersey looks to do just that Monday when it visits the Washington Capitals, a team they've had plenty of success against recently (7 p.m., FSN NY, WFAN 660 AM).

The Devils (16-10-3) have won eight of their last nine meetings with the Capitals (10-17-2), including a 3-2 victory Friday night at home.

That track record of success against Washington could indicate a quick rebound is in store for New Jersey following the end of its nine-game winning streak on Sunday.

The Devils fell 1-0 in overtime to the New York Rangers to snap the streak, which tied the third-longest in franchise history. Martin Brodeur made 28 saves but he and the defense couldn't stop Brendan Shanahan's goal 30 seconds into the extra session. New Jersey was also held in check offensively for much of the game, getting outshot 29-17.

"We have to look at the positives," Patrik Elias said. "We had something special going. To get a point in 10 games in a row that's great. We've just got to let it go."

The Devils also got shut out in the final game before their winning streak, a 1-0 loss to the New York Islanders on Nov. 16.

New Jersey will now try and avoid losing consecutive games for the third time since opening the season 3-6-1.

The Capitals, meanwhile, are looking for back-to-back wins for just the third time this season.

Washington beat the Atlanta Thrashers 6-3 on Saturday, when Nicklas Backstrom and Jeff Schultz started the scoring outburst with goals within one minute of each other in the first period.

Mike Green added two goals, while Alex Ovechkin added his 21st goal of the season and seventh in as many games for the Capitals, who fell one goal shy of their season high - a 7-1 win Oct. 29 at Toronto.

Olaf Kolzig recorded 23 saves to improve to 8-13-1 for the season and earn his first win since a 5-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Nov. 24.

Kolzig is 14-16-1 with two ties and a 2.47 goals-against average lifetime versus the Devils, but he is just 1-8-1 with one tie in 10 starts against them since Dec. 28, 2002.
