Preview: Devils vs. Panthers
New Jersey Devils

newjerseydevils.com – Martin Brodeur has been successful against just about every team during an illustrious 15-year career. His play at home against the Florida Panthers has been particularly dominant.

Brodeur and the Devils seek their eighth win in nine home games Wednesday night when they face the Panthers for the third time this season.

Brodeur has a winning record against every team except Detroit and Vancouver with a goals-against average under 2.00 versus six clubs, including Florida (1.98).

He is 30-11-0 with seven ties and five shutouts in 48 overall starts against the Panthers. Brodeur has been even better at home when facing Florida, going 15-3-0 with three ties, four shutouts and 1.84 GAA.

In his last five starts versus the Panthers in New Jersey, Brodeur is 5-0-0 with two shutouts and a 1.20 GAA.

Since starting slowly in their new home, the Devils (21-14-3) now seem comfortable playing at the Prudential Center. They have won seven of their last eight games there after losing four of their first seven.

New Jersey gave up three unanswered third-period goals in a 5-2 road loss to the New York Islanders on Saturday, ending a three-game win streak.

The loss dropped the Devils to 0-5-3 this season against their geographic and Atlantic Division rivals, the Islanders and the New York Rangers

"Games like that are a huge swing," Brodeur said. "We keep on making it harder on ourselves when we lose to teams in our division."

Zach Parise and John Madden scored for New Jersey, which went 0-for-3 on the power play, extending its drought with the man advantage to 22 straight opportunities without a goal.

"When you play a team you haven't beaten yet in your division this year, you'd think there would be more of a sense of desperation to want to play one of your better games," coach Brent Sutter said.

The Devils hope to have left wing Patrik Elias available after he sat out Saturday with a groin injury. Elias suffered the injury in Friday's shootout win over Buffalo.

"I felt tired as the game went on, and afterwards, it tightened up," Elias said. "We'll take a look at, and see how it feels."

Two players that won't be in New Jersey's lineup Wednesday are left wing Jay Pandolfo and defenseman Karel Rachunek, who both were placed on injured reserve.

Florida (18-18-3) looks to match a season high with its fourth straight road win. The Panthers opened this season 2-8-1 on the road, but have since won seven of eight away from home.

Despite a near 2-1 advantage in shots, the Panthers were shut out for the first time this season, 1-0 by visiting Philadelphia on Sunday.

Generating offense remains a concern for Florida, which has scored one goal or fewer in three of its last four games.

This is a matchup of two of the league's lowest-scoring teams. The Panthers are 26th in the NHL with 2.44 goals per game while the Devils rank 28th with 2.37.

These teams have split two meetings this season - both in Florida in October. The Devils have outscored the Panthers 16-6 during a five-game home win streak in the series.
