Season series --
The Devils, who took the season series in 2009-10 (3-0-1), won a pair of 2-1 games in Boston -- Dainius Zubrus scored with 1:26 remaining on Oct. 29 and Jamie Langenbrunner had the decisive goal in a shootout on Nov. 27 -- and David Clarkson contributed a goal and an assist to a 3-2 victory at the Prudential Center on March 15. Boston ended New Jersey's bid for a season sweep on March 30 when Patrice Bergeron connected for the only goal of the game 4:41 into overtime.

Big story -- After notching their first victory of the season on Wednesday against the Buffalo Sabres to help put an end to their three-game winless streak (0-2-1) to open the season, the Devils dropped a 3-2 decision to the Colorado Avalanche on Friday at Prudential Center. The Devils, still winless on home ice (0-2-1), lost to the Avalanche despite holding a decisive 43-22 advantage in shots and receiving a goal and an assist each from Matt Taormina and Ilya Kovalchuk.

Team Scope:

Devils --
After having only 17 players dressed for a 3-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday due to salary cap limitations and injuries to defenseman Anton Volchenkov (broken nose) and Brian Rolston (groin), the Devils increased that number to 18 against Buffalo before finally reaching a full roster of 20 on Friday against Colorado. Once Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond cleared waivers and was assigned to Albany of the AHL, New Jersey freed up enough cap space to sign forward Adam Mair and insert him into the lineup against the Sabres -- the team he played for the previous seven seasons before signing in New Jersey. Centers Jacob Josefson and Tim Sestito and defenseman Matt Corrente were recalled from Albany prior to the Avalanche game.

"We've had a lot of changes, we've had injuries, and we've played with 15 players, 16 players," Brodeur said. "It's been chaotic a little bit. So for us to finally get one under our belt, now we can start playing our season."

Bruins -- After earning a split of their two-game Czech series with the Phoenix Coyotes, the Bruins return to the United States with back-to-back road games against the Devils and Capitals (Tuesday). The Bruins chartered out of Prague on Sunday following a 3-0 victory on goals by Milan Lucic, Nathan Horton and rookie Tyler Seguin. Veteran goalie Tim Thomas made 29 saves to earn his 18th career shutout.

Who's hot -- Seguin, the No. 2 pick in the 2010 Entry Draft, scored his first NHL goal in the third period of the Bruins' second game last Sunday against the Coyotes. Michael Ryder lobbed the puck out of the defensive zone and Seguin caught it before setting it down and transitioning up ice. Seguin, who centered a line with Mark Recchi and Ryder, was pulled down and slid into the boards as the puck crossed the goal line.

Injury report -- The Bruins are without center Marc Savard (post-concussion symptoms) and wing Marco Sturm (knee), who opened the season on long-term injured reserve. … The Devils are without forward Brian Rolston (sports hernia) and defensemen Volchenkov (broken nose, stiff neck), Mark Fraser (fractured hand) and Bryce Salvador (concussion).

Stat pack -- Brodeur's NHL-leading 111th career shutout on Wednesday against the Buffalo Sabres also happened to be his 23rd career 1-0 victory.

Puck drop -- Devils wing David Clarkson was one of several players excited to have reinforcements from Albany for games against Colorado on Friday and Boston on Saturday.

"It's not like there are excuses about the situation we're in, but it's nice when you have a couple of guys coming back playing," Clarkson told NHL.com. "These are guys that had good camps and are getting an opportunity to be here. It helps us out with more lines, but at the end of the day I don't think that was the reason, or it had anything to do with what was going on.
