EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Reuniting Patrik Elias and Scott Gomez in overtime gave the New Jersey Devils something equally memorable -- a victory.

Elias set up Sergei Brylin's tying goal late in the third period and scored on a nice setup by Gomez 41 seconds into overtime to give the slumping Devils a 3-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night.

"We were a little desperate, down 2-1," Brylin said after the Devils won for only the second time in seven games (2-2-2-1). "We needed a win so badly after the road loses. Hopefully this game will help turn things around a little bit."

Devils coach Pat Burns admittedly gambled in the overtime, using three forwards to start.

"Pat called that play and it worked out," Elias said. "It gave us a chance. We controlled the puck great. It looked like we were on a power play."

Gomez did all the work on the game-winner, skating the puck through center ice and into the right faceoff circle. Once inside the circle, he looked for Elias.

"It's been a while since we played together," said Gomez, who also set up Stevenson's first-period goal. "I was thinking about going above the guy's stick and remembered Patty also told me: `I'll act like I'm going wide and cut in.' That's what he did. It's an old play from `99, or is it 2000."

Whenever. Elias got his stick on the puck and Oilers goalie Tommy Salo never had a chance to stop it.

Martin Brodeur made 23 saves for the Devils.

Ethan Moreau and Raffi Torres scored for Edmonton, which had a three-game (2-0-1) unbeaten streak and a three-game road winning streak snapped.

Edmonton coach Craig MacTavish was more upset with Brylin's goal because the Oilers failed to get the puck out of their own zone.

"We were just too casual up the wall," Mactavish said of defenseman Eric Brewer's clearing attempt around the boards. "... You have to be assertive. You have to be decisive."

Elias stopped the clearing pass at the blue line and wristed a shot toward net that Brylin deflected past Salo, who has 23 saves.

Until then, it looked like Moreau would get the best of the Devils again.

Moreau broke a 1-1 tie early in the period. He reached a puck that was flipped out Oilers' end in center ice, skated into the Devils' zone and beat Brodeur with a backhander.

It was Moreau's fifth goal in 10 games against New Jersey. He had two goals and an assist in last year's game between the teams.

Torres tied the game 1-all early in the second period, taking a cross-ice pass from Radek Dvorak and putting his shot into an open net.

Stevenson, who missed 12 games with a groin injury, scored on a power play set up by Gomez early in the first period to stake New Jersey to a 1-0 lead.
