EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Patrik Elias is making the most of the extra skating room provided in overtime.

Elias scored his fourth overtime goal of the season, tying the NHL record, and helped the New Jersey Devils pull out a 2-1 victory Saturday over the Washington Capitals.

"I like the four-on-four," said Elias who had both Devils goals. "It's very exciting for the fans. You're trying to win a hockey game and it's been working for us."

Elias's four overtime goals this season equals the mark held by teammate Scott Niedermayer and Toronto's Mats Sundin.

In the extra session, Elias picked up the puck in the Devils end and skated into the Capitals zone. He left a drop pass for Scott Gomez, who found Brian Rafalski open at the point. Rafalski fired a hard shot that goalie Olaf Kolzig dived to stop, but Elias swatted in the rebound at 2:17 to give New Jersey its second win in six games (2-3-1).

Corey Schwab, giving Martin Brodeur a rare day off, made 18 saves to improve to 2-0-1 this season. Schwab has developed the knack of staying sharp despite limited playing time.

"I felt good coming into the game," he said. "That's all you can hope for. I had good practices and tried to carry it over into the game."

Jaromir Jagr scored for Washington.

Jagr scored the only goal of the first period at 7:30. Robert Lang took the initial shot that Schwab knocked to the slot with his glove. Jagr pounced on the rebound for his third goal in four games.

Schwab, in only his third appearance this season, made a big pad stop on Bates Battaglia's breakaway midway through the first period to prevent another Washington goal.

Elias tied it 46 seconds into the second on the power play. He sped down the left wing and flipped a shot past Kolzig.

Schwab foiled Battaglia again midway through the second period and stopped Jagr twice on point-blank shots when Washington had a five-on-three power-play for a full two minutes late in the frame.

Both teams had good scoring chances in the third. Capitals defenseman Sergei Gonchar hit the post, and Kolzig stopped Jay Pandolfo on a two-on-one break.

Capitals coach Glen Hanlon did not fault his team's effort.

"It was a good game," he said. "I don't expect much more from our group. I was pretty proud of how we played."
