PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Sometimes it pays to be both lucky and good. Just ask New Jersey goaltender Martin Brodeur and defenseman Brad Lukowich.

Zach Parise and Brian Gionta scored on backhanded shots during the shootout to give the New Jersey Devils a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday night.

Brodeur blanked Philadelphia's Simon Gagne and Petr Nedved in the tiebreaker - with a little luck.

"He (Gagne) had me beat," Brodeur said. "I just spread my legs as far as I could and I got my toe on it right on the goal line. I got a little lucky."

The Devils tied it 3-3 with 2:12 left in the third period when Brad Lukowich's short-handed wrist shot sailed by goaltender Antero Niittymaki, who was screened and knocked to the ice by New Jersey's Jay Pandolfo.

"I noticed their guys had not started to backcheck," Lukowich said. "I took off and closed my eyes and shot."

It was Lukowich's first goal in 29 games. He last scored against Atlanta last March 23.

Mike Knuble had scored the go-ahead goal for the Flyers earlier in the period.

Todd Fedoruk celebrated his return to Philadelphia with a goal and an assist, and Randy Jones also had a goal and assist for the Flyers, who had won three of four.

Parise and Patrik Elias scored the other goals for the Devils, who snapped a season-high, four-game winless streak (0-3-1) with a 5-2 home win over Pittsburgh on Friday.

Knuble had given the Flyers a 3-2 lead on a turnaround shot in the slot, beating Brodeur to the stick side 24 seconds into the third period. He took a pass from Jones, who picked off a Devils clearing attempt.

Fedoruk, who last played for the Flyers in the 2003-04 season, was acquired from the Anaheim Ducks on Nov. 13 . He had been sidelined since October when he broke multiple bones in his face during a fight with Minnesota's Derek Boogard.

Fedoruk said mistakes ruined what could have been a "perfect scenario" about his return to Philadelphia.

"Mental mistakes are what cost us," Fedoruk said. "We have to brush those out of our game."

Niittymaki had 29 saves. Brodeur stopped 22 shots.

Fedoruk put the Flyers ahead 1-0 at 1:37 of the first period when he redirected Boyd Kane's pass from the right side into the net.

At 17:08 of the period, Fedoruk feathered a pass from above the left circle to Jones, who snapped a wrist shot over Brodeur's outstretched glove.

Parise scored a fluke goal to pull the Devils within 2-1 with 2:03 left in the period while attempting a centering pass from behind the net. The puck deflected off the right skate of Flyers defenseman Joni Pitkanen and into the goal.

Elias tied it at 13:00 of the second period when his shot from high in the slot bounced off Niittymaki's glove into the net.

"I just was not not ready for it for some reason," Niittymaki said. "It hit my glove and hit my mask a little bit."

Both goaltenders made spectacular saves in the second period to keep the game close. Niittymaki denied Elias' one-timer with his blocker early in the period. Brodeur then stopped Knuble's short-handed, point-blank shot. He also turned aside Gagne during a breakaway.

"Brodeur is one of the reasons we won the game," said Devils coach Claude Julien. "He made some unbelievable saves at times."

Notes: Philadelphia C Peter Forsberg sat out with the flu. ... Fedoruk's goal was his first in 19 games since March 31 when he scored against Dallas. ... Flyers C R.J. Umberger played in his 100th NHL game. ... New Jersey finished its fifth set of back-to-back games with a 4-1 record in first games and 2-3 in second games.
