OTTAWA (AP) -Ray Emery held off the Devils until his Ottawa Senators teammates could find a way to score on Martin Brodeur.

Emery stopped 25 shots for his second playoff shutout and Tom Preissing scored 4:46 into the third period, leading Ottawa to a 2-0 win over the New Jersey Devils in Game 3 of their playoff series Monday night.

Emery, who clinched the Senators' first round win with a shutout over Pittsburgh, outdueled Brodeur as Ottawa took a 2-1 lead in the second-round series.

"It's definitely great to play against a legend of the game like that, and it's a great feeling to win," Emery said.

Preissing beat Brodeur with a high shot from a tight angle in front of the right boards for the game's first goal.

"At some point something's going to have to go in. It just happened to be on my shot," Preissing said. "If I had five more shots like that, probably none of them would go in."

Jason Spezza scored into an empty net with 56 seconds to go.

Brodeur, who stopped 43 shots for his 94th playoff win Sunday, made 32 saves. He said he was disappointed that the referees hadn't seen Senators center Mike Fisher make contact with him on Preissing's goal.

"I got touched," Brodeur said. "It's unfortunate he didn't make the call on it. He probably didn't think it was enough for him to call, but it definitely took my concentration away."

Fisher acknowledged he made contact with Brodeur after looking at a replay.

"I got a piece of Brodeur and I tripped him up a little bit and Preissing got the shot away," Fisher said. "It was a great shot. I didn't intentionally try to trip him."

Devils coach Lou Lamoriello didn't care about Fisher's intent.

"I don't think it matters whether it's intentional or not intentional, he made contact with the goalie," Lamoriello said.

The Senators ended five-game point streaks by both Brian Gionta, who had also scored in five straight games, and playoffs scoring leader Scott Gomez.

"It's satisfying to know that we have a goalie that's going to give us a chance to win every night," Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson said. "It's very important in the playoffs and we're confident in him. I think it shows in the way our defense plays."

The game remained scoreless through the first two periods, with Ottawa mounting the more sustained attack while New Jersey sought to be opportunistic. And there were plenty of chances between the two teams as both Brodeur and Emery stepped up with big saves.

"That's playoff hockey and goaltending at its best," Gomez said. "What a show those two put on. You've got to tip your hat to both those guys. They put on a clinic tonight. Emery, what can you say, we tried to throw everything at him and he did a great job. Marty, he kept us in there. They could have easily put a couple more away."

The Senators actually put the puck in the net twice in the first period, though play had already been whistled down in both cases.

Spezza appeared to have opened the scoring when Brodeur had stopped a shot and Spezza drove to the crease and jammed a loose puck into the net. Referee Kelly Sutherland quickly interrupted the celebration as he waved off the goal from his position directly behind the net.

The Senators came close in the dying seconds of the first period in an echo of Sergei Brylin's controversial goal in New Jersey's 3-2 win in double overtime on Saturday. Ottawa coach Bryan Murray complained the off-ice official at the Meadowlands was slow to start the clock when Brylin scored with 0.2 seconds left in the first period of that game off a faceoff with 2.7 seconds remaining.

The Senators were on the power play with 3.1 seconds remaining in the first period Monday and Ottawa's Antoine Vermette got the puck off a scramble and put a shot past Brodeur, but time had clearly expired.

Notes: Brodeur has 22 playoff shutouts, one less than all-time leader Patrick Roy. He is 7-9 overall against Ottawa in the playoffs. ... Heatley ended three-game goals and points streaks. He had three goals and three assists in his previous three games. ... A crowd of 19,636 attended the game.
